A SOUTHSIDE school has received a festive boost – thanks to the generosity of its Bostonian benefactor.Billy Higgins was at the Southill Junior School to present a cheque for $7,500, which will be matched by the regenration program and used to develop its after-school facility.Mr Higgins has been fundraising for the Southill community since he first visited in 1985, and was stunned by the generosity of the people here, when he brought visitor s to Limerick for a holiday.

The funds are specifically used for personnel cost incurred in running the after school clubs. The clubs run three afternoons for the younger children and four afternoons for the 6 to 8 year olds. It is crucial to the activities, and will give Southill Junior School the ability to employ personnel with appropriate skills and talents to delivery quality service for the kids of Southill, Limerick.

LOCAL sports stars teed off in aid of St Kieran’s Boys National School this week.
Former Clare senior hurler. All-star; and team manager Ger Loughnane, former physiotherapist of the Clare hurling team Colm Flynn and former Kerry footballer Mike Sheehy were amoung those who came on board to raise funds for St Kieran’s Boys School in the Billy Higgins Perpetual Golf Trophy on Friday.
The event is part of the Limerick-Boston Golf Classic 2002, organised in collaboration with Boston businessman Billy Higgins and sponsors of the event, Dromoland Castle.
State Senator Jack Hart of Boston travelled to Limerick as guest of honour for the event.
Gaelscoil Sheoirse Clancy was founded in 1986. The demand for a Gaelscoil came from the local community and it’s success is a tribute to the people of Southill. Parents who exercised their constitutional right to opt for the education of their children through Irish have stood by the school through many adversities.
I AM old now, old beyond my years. Exposure to violence, beatings, abandonment and abuse has scrawled lines on my heart and face that will never be removed. I am facing the end of my life with the most terrible memories suffered in city during our “Tiger” years. Little did I think that my life would end like this.
